Mi Trompito...

In English it means "toy top" (masculine) or "pout"(feminine)

But most importantly, it is the nickname I gave to my daughter...

Mi Trompito Eco-Playclothes and Playthings was born in San Diego in July 2009. An innovative eco-friendly children’s line, it integrates fashion and public health in neat and unexpected ways; offering only the best materials that are sustainable for this and future generations.

The brainchild of Gina Engler, Mi Trompito Eco-Playclothes and Playthings offers parents peace of mind with the products they buy; knowing they are manufactured in the USA; by workers receiving fair wages in an energy efficient facility; using only 100% certified organic cotton and other sustainable materials. That is the least this mother of a two year old girl can do for the future well-being of our earth and kids. Yet, she’s doing more, everyday looking for ways to be greener and more sustainable.

That’s where her scientic and public health problem solving skills come into play. Having studied public health at Yale University; biology at Howard University; and complementing that education with her continuing education at Mesa College Fashion Program; she has found a way to look at fashion through a scientic and public health lens. Gina continues
to delve into the scientic research daily to ensure she is using the latest green technology available.  Not only that, she brings forth her lifelong observation of street fashion and folkloric dressing while living in Panama, (her birth country), Cairo, Washington DC, Dakar, Budapest, New York and now in San Diego. Although she took a long detour to
her lifelong dream of working in fashion; it is never too late in her mind. In fact, as a mother, she feels this is the best moment to take on this challenge.

It is as a mother she has found inspiration for the fashion straight from her daughter’s quirky outfit choices; Sofia alone inspired her to come up with the name Mi Trompito. It is in her name that she created this company, which in Spanish means toy top in the masculine form and pout in the feminine form. She does a little of both, qualifying Sofia to be a complete Trompito in all aspects of the term.

As a mother she has also naturally evolved in her concern for what her daughter eats, plays with and wears. She wants to ensure that all she eats, plays with and wears is as healthy as possible for her AND the environment.  Her design perspective is to design for kids like her daughter, problem solving design elements every step of the way; using
specic criteria from this mothers' standpoint; and feedback given by numerous parents.

With that feedback in hand, mi trompito has created a list of design criteria to guide all its product designs, from cradle to cradle, to ensure the products meet rigorous standards for play and sustainability. As a result, it hopes to meet the common needs as defined by parents for playclothes and playthings for their children.

For children should be able to play...naturally.
